1. Basic information of the country
1.1 Lao P.D.R
Laos, officially, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, is a small country
in South East Asia with border to China by the north, Cambodia by the south, Vietnam by
the east, Thailand by the west and Myanmar by the northwest. It is composed of 17
provinces, 142 districts and 11,386 villages. The total population is 5,621,982. There are
three main majority ethnic groups (Lao Lum, Lao Theung, Lao Soung) that including 68
minority ethnic groups. 80% of the population is living in rural areas. |
1.2 Thailand
Thailand is situated in the heart of the Southeast Asian mainland. It covers an
area of 513,115 sqkm. It is bordered by Laos to the northeast, Myanmar to
the north and west, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south.
Thailand is naturally divided into four topographic regions: 1) the North, 2) the Central Plain,
or Chao Phraya River basin, 3) the Northeast, or the Korat Plateau, and 4) the South, or Southern
Isthmus. The population of Thailand is approximately 62 million (January 2001).
The most important ethic minority is Chinese. It is composed of 76 provinces, |

2.1 Savannakhet
Savannakhet province is located in the middle part of Lao P.D.R with border to Quand Tri of
Vietnam by the northeast, Mukdahan of Thailand by the west, Saravan and Khammuan
provinces of Lao P.D.R by the north and the south, respectively. . The surface areas is
21.774 sqkm. . There are 15 districts, 1,543 villages, 136.590 families, 132.301 households
with a total population of 825,902 in which 417,473 is female, |
2.2 Mukdahan
Mukdahan Province is located in the Northeast of Thailand, it is shared border with Savannakhet
of Lao P.D.R by the east. A total population is 328,139 of which 166,310 is female.
There are 7 districts with 550 villages, 89,513 families and 68,990 households. |
